The 2012 legacy

The legacy plans for the Olympic Park are vital to the renaissance of Stratford. A Legacy Plan, or Masterplan Framework (LMF) published in February 2009 is a key driver for change and growth in the area and vital in setting out the Olympic 'inheritance' for Stratford.  To deliver the plan the Government and the Mayor of London established the Olympic Park Legacy Company in May 2009.

The Legacy Plan proposals envisage the establishment of six new neighbourhoods (housing is a major part of the plan) and five permanent sporting venues across the Olympic Park.

The six new neighbourhood areas are:

  • Hackney Wick East - focused on the creation of business and employment opportunities, and with an ambition for 2,070 housing units, the area will be a vital link between Hackney Wick and Stratford City
  • Old Ford - focused on water frontages, the area will combine a new primary school with a broad mix of approx 1,150 homes, a nursery school, community space and new Polyclinic
  • Olympic Quarter - focused on sport and education with the Legacy Stadium embedded into the urban fabric, new sports academy and primary school, with an ambition for 2,050 housing units
  • Stratford Village - focused on the creation of a family orientated neighbourhood with primary school and pre-school nursery that has accessible play spaces, and 1,480 best of contemporary design homes
  • Stratford Waterfront - a truly mixed area with approx 1,850 homes, cafes, restaurants, retail galleries and music venues.  It has exceptional conections to Stratford City and will include the Aquatics Centre and stunning views into the Legacy parklands and stadium
  • Pudding Mill - evolution into a mixed residential neighbourhood of approx 1,460 homes, with water based activities and riverfronts with waterside cafes and restaurants

The five permanent venues are:

  • Legacy Stadium - conversion of the Olympic Stadium from 80,000 seats to a reduced 25,000 capacity with Athletics use at its core
  • Aquatics Centre - conversion from 20,000 seats to 2,500 capacity centre with 2 x 50m pools and 1 x 25m diving pool
  • Arena 3 - multi indoor sport use venue also able to host cultural events*
  • VeloPark - with 6,000 capacity velodrome, modified BMX track, 1 mile road cycle circuit and a mountain bike course
  • Eton Manor - featuring an indoor and outdoor tennis centre and a 5-a-side football centre

*The "Cultural Olympiad" a festival celebrating the diversity and richness of culture in London, the UK and the world, is taking place during the period 2008-2012.  This will leave a lasting cultural legacy that Stratford is ideally placed to harness, evolve and make its own as it seeks to develop its identity over the coming years.
