London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games
The Olympic, Paralympic and their Legacy Transformation Planning Application submitted in February 2007 include a range of proposals that will transform the Lower Lea Valley. These include the construction and use of sporting venues; the reconfiguration of existing open space and the provision of new areas of open space; the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre combined into one large building complex; a network of new highways and bridges; and the construction and use of new utilities infrastructure.
Vacant possession following the Compulsory Purchase Order process occurred in July 2007, with permitted development, such as some demolition. The planning applications were determined in late summer 2007, and work commenced thereafter.
The 500 acre Olympic Park will be home to the major sports facilities for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with the Olympic Stadium, aquatics Centre, VeloPark and Athletes Village all located in Stratford.
The Olympic Stadium will hold the Track and Field competitions, with 80,000 seats during the competition, while the Aquatics Centre will contain two 50 metre pools, a 25m diving pool and fitness centre with capacity for 20,000 spectators during the Games. along with the VeloPark, these will be permanent structures which will be reduced in size after the Games for ongoing use.
The Athletes Village is being constructed on the Stratford City site by a consortium led by Lend Lease which includes East Thames Group. The 2,800 unit village will provide accommodation for up to 17,500 athletes and officials during the Olympics and Paralympics.
